Question 1 of 9
What is the accessible extent of the affected area?
Before you decide to clean it yourself
A small patch is only one part of the decision. Stop and get qualified help if water may be contaminated, the area is unsafe to reach, or the work could disturb hidden growth, electrical equipment, lead, or asbestos. Do not run an HVAC system that you suspect is contaminated with mold.
- Record what you can see safely. Note the room, material, approximate affected area, and when it became wet. Do not open a wall just to complete the quiz.
- Identify what is still unknown. A concealed cavity, recurring leak, or uncertain water source is a reason to investigate before cleaning.
- Use the result to prepare your next conversation. Bring photos and your notes to the contractor discussion or use the written scope guide.
The result is planning guidance. It cannot inspect concealed materials, diagnose symptoms, or certify that a home is safe. EPA’s home cleanup guidance explains why extent, water contamination, HVAC involvement, and health concerns all matter.
